Before the start of the 2023-24 season, I had three underrated prospects that any Toronto Maple Leafs fan should keep an eye on and get to know a little better.
Nikita Grebyonkin signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, according to The Athletic’s Chris Johnston. Grebyonkin was drafted 135th overall by the Maple Leafs in 2022.
This will be a shorter update that I wanted to make because we're still waiting for the third round of the CHL playoffs start – in fact, they all start later today!
Welcome back for another edition of the Leafs Prospect Roundup! From Easton Cowan looking to continue his streak and Nikita Grebyonkin making his mark in the KHL playoffs to NCAA schedules wrapping up, it has been a busy week in the world of Leafs prospects, so let’s get right to it.
The first round of the KHL playoffs has come to an end for Nikita Grebyonkin. Hi team, Metallurg, were the top seeded team in their conference and just defeated the 8th seeded Amur in six games.
After weeks of speculation, the NHL’s trade deadline came and went without the Leafs making a major move to improve their current roster. Instead, general
Few Toronto Maple Leafs prospects get the diehards as excited as Nikita Grebyonkin gets them. And it’s understandable. Drafted 135th overall in 2022 as an overager, Grebyonkin has emerged as a youngster with a bright future – and it’s looking all the more likely that he’s bound for North America sooner rather than later.
As of Monday, the KHL's regular season is over. That means Nikita Grebyonkin has finished his first full KHL season, and we have a pretty large sample of his games and stats to talk about.
With players like Nick Robertson, Pontus Holmberg, and Bobby McMann making their way to the Leafs and Matthew Knies bypassing the AHL altogether, Toronto doesn’t have a ton of readymade help waiting in the wings with the Marlies.
If you’ve read any articles about Leafs prospects recently, chances are it’s either been about Fraser Minten or Easton Cowan. The two players just represented Canada at the World Juniors, and as recent early-round picks of the Leafs (38th and 28th overall respectively), they’re naturally going to get most of the attention.
This will be my third prospect report on Grebyonkin this season. The first came early in the KHL season: Maple Leafs Prospect Report: Grebyonkin’s KHL season begins Nikita Grebyonkin’s season has already begun!
Ryan Tverberg’s stock has been rising with regular appearances in the Leafs Prospect Roundup over the last few weeks, and he stole the show with a career night against the Belleville Senators on Friday.
When the Leafs opted to send Fraser Minten back to junior after he dressed in four NHL games to begin the season, the expectation was that he would be named captain and become a go-to-guy for the Kamloops Blazers before eventually being moved to a contender ahead of the WHL trade deadline.
If you don’t know the name Nikita Grebyonkin, you should probably start to familiarize yourself. The 20-year-old Russian forward was drafted in the 5th round (135th overall) of the 2022 NHL Draft and quickly put his name on the map with an impressive KHL rookie season.
It's been a while since I shared a report on the man affectionately known as GREB, and there's been some noteworthy updates worth mentioning. The last update was on September 11th, and as of writing this (Oct 17) it will be over a month and about a dozen games.
Fraser Minten has been the story of Leafs training camp, and it’s starting to look like he could remain a focal point when the regular season gets underway.
For the big club, the preseason is just around the corner and players are attending their respective camps. For others, like some NHL prospects in the KHL, the season is already underway and we can check in on games that actually matter.
Because the Toronto Maple Leafs have been contenders for so long and have used the trade deadline to fill holes and improve the team, it can be tough to keep a huge pool of good prospects.
I'll forgive everyone for not being all aboard the hype train for Grebyonkin yet, leading to a mere 12th place ranking in this year's T25U25. I know they will be getting first class tickets soon enough.
We have updated the criteria from previous editions of TLN’s prospect rankings regarding who is considered a “prospect” for the purpose of this exercise.
